History and Highlights of Ringers:

Pre History: Marquette University wrestling provides Wednesday night open mats for decades.

1987: Jim Schmitz becomes Head Assistant coach at Marquette University, begins running organized workouts on Monday and Wednesday nights.

1988: Marquette Wrestling hosts team from West Germany in cultural exchange and dual meet. In the summer, Coach Schmitz leads an Illinois Cultural Exchange Team to Germany. On the team is high school junior Ross Bruno.

1989: Ringers name first used. The name is derived from the German word for wrestling (Ringen) and wrestler (Ringer) and is “americanized” by adding the “s” to make “Ringers”.

1989: Ringers has first of many Junior National All-Americans in Shorewood’s Corey Ricco (5th in Greco-Roman). 60 wrestlers in the club. Canadian wrestling exchange trip.

1996: Ringers represents State of Wisconsin in Junior National Duals. The club defeats state teams- Ohio, Illinois and Michigan on way to a 2nd place finish in the nation. Club also had three Junior National Greco-Roman All-Americans and one Freestyle Junior National champion.

1999: Ringers wrestling hits an all-time high in wrestler participation with 154 wrestlers in the club.

2001: Marquette University drops wrestling (June 15th). Two Ringer wrestlers are crowned Junior National All-Americans and club participation is 119.

2001: Ringers begins year-round training program with fall and winter training schools at Shorewood High School.

2002: Ringers opens Clybourn gym with 80 current participants.
